CLES exams are conducted in the form of a realistic scenario based on the domain targeted for each level. The tasks to be completed are all based on social situations. They help to assess skills that can be transferred to the professional world.
Candidates are given a dossier composed of texts and authentic audiovisual documents and a question paper. They must pick out relevant information from the written and audiovisual documents, based on the comprehension activities in order to complete realistic tasks:
writing emails or short letters (level B1), summary notes or articles (B2) or briefing notes (C1);
leaving voicemails (level B1), negotiating and reaching a compromise (level B2) or providing expert advice (level C1).
In order to succeed in the CLES, the candidates must:
complete the scenario-based mission;
make the contents their own;
process the information (sort, select, prioritise, etc.) in order to complete the final writing and speaking tasks.
NOTE: All the tasks proposed are interrelated. The information identified during the listening and reading tasks is intended to enrich the writing and speaking tasks.
